Hartpury University and Hartpury College graduate Eliot Baker has played a starring role in Great Britain and Ireland’s thrilling Walker Cup victory over the United States at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland.
The Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport (Golf) and BSc (Hons) Sports Business Management graduate contributed an impressive 2½ points as Great Britain and Ireland secured a dramatic 13½–12½ victory, lifting the famous trophy for the first time since 2015.
The 51st Walker Cup, held on 5 and 6 September, brought together leading amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland and the United States for one of the most prestigious team contests in the sport.
Great Britain and Ireland held a narrow 6½–5½ advantage after Saturday’s play, before the USA won all four of Sunday morning’s foursomes to take control of the match.
Needing seven points from the ten remaining singles matches, the home side produced a remarkable afternoon comeback, with Eliot playing an important part in the turnaround.
Eliot defeated experienced American Stewart Hagestad in his Sunday singles match, adding another vital point to the Great Britain and Ireland total before Josh Hill eventually secured the decisive point on the 18th green.
It completed an outstanding weekend for Eliot, who collected 2½ points across the contest. He won both of his singles matches, defeating Josiah Gilbert on Saturday before overcoming Hagestad on Sunday, while also earning half a point alongside Stuart Grehan in Saturday morning’s foursomes.
His contribution made him one of Great Britain and Ireland’s joint-highest points scorers across the Walker Cup.
The victory represents another significant milestone in Eliot’s journey from the Hartpury Golf Academy to the highest levels of the amateur game.
Eliot progressed through Hartpury College and the Golf Academy before continuing his studies at Hartpury University, where he completed his BSc (Hons) Sports Business Management degree in 2024.
During his time at Hartpury, he established himself as one of the institution’s most successful golfers on the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) circuit and progressed into the England set-up.
Since graduating, Eliot has continued to work closely with Hartpury Golf Coach Gareth James while building an increasingly impressive international record.
His recent performances earned him a place in the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team for the second successive match. Heading into this year’s contest, Eliot was ranked 13th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and had enjoyed an excellent 2026 season, including reaching the final of the Spanish International Amateur Championship, winning the individual title at the European Nations Cup at Sotogrande and finishing runner-up in the Brabazon Trophy.
Eliot’s success provides another example of the pathway available to talented student-athletes at Hartpury, combining academic study with specialist coaching and an environment designed to support progression in elite sport.

Great Britain and Ireland’s victory at Lahinch was their first in the Walker Cup since defeating the USA at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2015. The Walker Cup has been contested since 1922 and is played between teams of leading male amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland and the United States.
