Career Overview

I grew up in Germany and came to the UK to study Equine Science. I completed my BSc (Hons) Equine Science and Management at Bishop Burton (University of Hull) and then my MSc Equine Science at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. I worked in the industry as a groom and instructor, as well as a lab research assistant alongside my studies, before I joined the team at Hartpury in 2007 and completed the PGCEHE with UWE. In my time here, I have held a number of roles, including programme management of several programmes in our portfolio, Elite Athlete Mentor, as well as thematic aspects in my senior lecturer role relating to the student experience and widening participation. I was a member of the National Educational Opportunities Executive Committee and contributed to their strategy documents. I am also part of the team that organises the EXPLORE event for students with declared mental health conditions on entry to their course. I am in the final stages of completing my EdD (HE) with the University of Sheffield.

Teaching and supervision

  • Equine Reproductive Physiology
  • Research modules at UG and PG levels
  • Management of the Performance Horse
  • Supervision of UG and PG Dissertations

Research interests

I have a wide range of interests, and most of my research with students uses questionnaires or retrospective data in:

  • Equine Stud Management practices
  • Equine Reproductive Health
  • Equine Health
  • Owner perception and establishing current practice
  • Sustainability

Since embarking on the EdD, where I investigated lessons learnt from the experiences of non-traditional students on equine programmes during COVID-19 and how we can use these in future, I have also supervised student projects in the areas of student experience and teacher training.
