City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Grooming Assistants

What will I study on the course?

Health & Safety
Handling of dogs
Bathing and drying techniques
Dog breeds and their temperaments
Preparing dogs for styling and the correct selection of shampoo and equipment as well as basic clipping and trimming techniques

Please note: as this is a Level 2 qualification, there is no styling of heads, scissoring of legs, additional advanced scissoring or hand stripping involved in this course.

What makes this course special?

You will be taught by a qualified dog groomer with industry experience and a background of working and showing dogs. Class sizes are at a maximum of 6, to ensure quality and safety and all sessions are taught in a dedicated salon, with a range of equipment to support learning.

On successful completion of this course, you will gain a City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants (7863-02)

Progression after the course

The C&G Level 2 certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants, will provide learners with the fundamental skills to groom dogs and work within a salon developing experience. The Level 2 qualification is a pre-requisite to the Level 3 Diploma which teaches the complexities of grooming including breed standards.  

Entry Requirements

All candidates will be required to complete an initial assessment to determine the level of numeracy and literacy and a baseline assessment to ascertain the starting knowledge around dog grooming. Both of these assessments enable us to identify levels of understanding at the starting point, and any support that may be required. 

Candidates must hold a minimum of Level 2 in English and Maths to be accepted onto the course and to ensure they are well placed to achieve the qualification successfully. 

Candidates must have completed the Hartpury College "Introduction to Dog Grooming" taster session or have previous experience and attend an interview with the dog grooming tutor. We run taster sessions throughout the year, please email shortcourses@hartpury.ac.uk  to book.

The City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants (7863-02) is a 16-day course delivered two days a week, over 8 weeks. 

Mondays & Tuesdays: 8:30am-5pm

Wednesdays & Thursdays: 8:30am-5pm

These sessions are a mixture of practical and theory with an element of self-study at home for this course.

The full cost for this course is £1747.20. Funding is available to those who are eligible. Eligibility for any funding support can be explored following successful completion of the initial assessment.

A full grooming kit bag with all the required equipment is to be purchased for £450 and is yours to keep. This includes clippers, blades, scissors and tools.

All course fees must be paid at least 4 weeks prior to the first day of the course. If we have not received full payment of course fees your place on the course cannot be guaranteed.

If you need to cancel your course, Hartpury College will refund tuition fees at the following rates: 

1. Up to 30 days prior to the course start date – full refund of tuition fees*
2. Between 30 and 14 days prior to the course start date –50% refund of tuition fees*
3. Less than 14 days’ notice – no refund of tuition fees

*an administrative fee of £50 will be deducted from the refund value.

If Hartpury postpones or cancels the course and is unable to provide an alternative date(s) any tuition fees will be refunded in full.
