This foundation year pathway provides an alternative route into degree-level study. It’s ideal for those who need to gain subject-specific knowledge and skills in order to progress onto the full BSc qualification.

The international horseracing world is growing, especially in areas such as Dubai, Japan, Hong Kong, the US and Australia. There are a range of exciting career opportunities all over the world. As a graduate from this degree you will have a strong practical knowledge and experience of the racing industry whilst making valuable contacts for your dream career.

Alongside core business and equine modules, you’ll be able to tailor your degree to suit your interests and career goals. You’ll have the opportunity to delve deeper into fundamental areas of international horseracing business including hospitality, marketing, sponsorship and media. You’ll also be able to immerse yourself in the equine management side of the commercial racing world, developing your expertise in areas such as bloodstock whilst gaining practical and professional experience towards your CV.

An integral study trip will enable you to experience the horseracing business environment first hand. You’ll also make valuable connections which can open the doors to a range of exciting work experience and graduate employment opportunities. You’ll have opportunities to visit horseracing yards and tracks across the UK and further afield, which will give you valuable insights ready for your career. Industry opportunities

Gloucestershire is renowned for horseracing, with the world famous Gold Cup held in Cheltenham each year. The county is home to some of the world’s most prestigious racehorse training centres. Our students gain experience with many of these organisations, as well as through our partnerships with key organisations including the British Horseracing Association, racecourses across the UK, NAF and Baileys Horse Feeds.

Learning and assessment

This programme comprises of different modules, which focus on specific subjects. The modular structure of the programme gives you flexibility and choice and you can attend introductory sessions for optional modules before having to finally decide which ones you wish to study. You will be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams and coursework. Several of our graduates have gone on to forge successful careers within the horseracing industry. One has even gone on to become the UK’s youngest racehorse trainer! Roles include:

Entry Requirements

GCSE | A minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded) or equivalent, to include English Language and Mathematics. 

A Level | Typical offer is DD-EE or equivalent. This must  include a minimum of one A Level.

Vocational award | Typical offer is a PPP in an Extended Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject.

We welcome students with equivalent qualifications, including Access and the International Baccalaureate. Contact the admissions team to discuss.

Some evidence of the awareness of the Horseracing industry should be evidenced within the personal statement.

We may interview mature applicants and those with non-traditional qualifications.

Previous learning towards a university-level qualification or relevant work experience may count as credit for this course. Please contact our admissions team.
