This degree is ideal for those who want to pursue a range of specialist scientific areas that focus on the processes underpinning disease. You’ll apply theory to practice in our dissection and microbiology laboratories, as well as working with our diverse range of animal species on campus. Your first year will provide the foundation you need to tailor your degree to suit your interests and career goals.

There are three core streams running throughout the programme: animal health and disease; microbiology; and animal therapy. Animal health and disease focuses on the science underpinning animal health. As part of each stream, you’ll examine the cause, transmission and diagnosis of notifiable and zoonotic diseases, studying farm animals, equine and companion species.

Microbiology will enable you to understand microorganisms and how laboratory techniques can help to diagnose bacterial diseases. You’ll conduct research in our specialist laboratories, examining the mechanisms of infection and use of antibiotics. Animal therapy will introduce you to different types of physical therapies and  hydrotherapy. You’ll examine the efficacy of different therapies for different conditions and species, working with horses and dogs in our equine and canine therapy centres.

You’ll also be able to pursue modules on breeding and genetics, as well as livestock production and reproduction which include practical sessions on our commercial farm. Production modules will enable you to study different production systems across a range of enterprises and evaluate cutting edge research in the field of animal production.

Learning and assessment

This programme comprises of different modules, which focus on specific subjects. The modular structure of the programme gives you flexibility and choice and you can attend introductory sessions for optional modules before having to finally decide which ones you wish to study. You will be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams and coursework. Many of the modules will be marked based on a mixture of assessment types, whilst others will be based solely on one type of assessment.

Entry Requirements

A typical offer for this course is:

UCAS tariff points | 128 UCAS tariff points or equivalent.

GCSE | A minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded) or equivalent, to include English Language, Mathematics and a Science.

A-level | Typical offer is ABB or equivalent. This must include a minimum of two A-levels including one in a Biological Science.

Vocational award | Typical offer is a DDM in an Extended Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject.

We may interview mature applicants and those with non-traditional qualifications to ensure this is the right course for you.

We welcome students with equivalent qualifications, including Access and the International Baccalaureate. Contact the admissions team to discuss.
