BSc Equine Science with Foundation Year student blog

Lauren Mcneill

Hi, I’m Lauren and I’m studying the BSc Equine Science with Foundation Year degree.

Hartpury is second to none

As I had time out of education before coming to university, Hartpury’s foundation year helped me to grow and develop certain academic skills that will help me during the rest of my degree and future career.

The course has given me the confidence to present and talk about subjects to different groups of individuals.

As Hartpury is so specialised within all subject areas, I believe it is second to none.

Hartpury has a range of high-level equipment that enables you to put your theory into practice and provide you with experience you wouldn’t receive anywhere else.

Attention-grabbing practicals!

I love all the practical sessions we have in the laboratories. They’ve really grabbed my attention and enabled me to apply the theory we’ve learned in lecturers and seminars to real-life situations, which is how it will be in my future career.

Support is amazing

Moving from home was a difficult transition for me, but I received support from my tutor about the situation.

There is a range of different support centres for areas such as mental health, academic support and finance that are easy to get in touch with and seek help from.

The support about future careers is also amazing. Staff recommend people to talk to and help you to decide what is best and what specific career you want to go into.

High standard of education during Covid-19

Hartpury have adapted to ensure students still receive a high standard of education during the pandemic.

There are still a range of face-to-face lectures and practical sessions on campus, while I’ve also found the lectures on Microsoft Teams really useful.

Because these are recorded, you can re-watch them to have a better understanding of the subject matter.

Hartpury has also brought in a number of safety measures during the pandemic, including social distancing rules, mask zones and providing hand-sanitiser around the entire campus.
