University Students

Going to university is as much about having amazing experiences, as it is about gaining your degree. When you’re after a fun day out with friends, there’s plenty to see and do in the local area.

We asked our students to share their favourite things to do and places to visit in Gloucestershire.

Hartpury offers so many exciting opportunities and things to do. However, when you go off campus, you’ll never be short of fun activities or entertainment.

Gloucester city is just 15-minutes away by bus – which stops at the Sports Academy on campus – and offers something for everyone. As well as high-street favourites, you can find really niche shops and cafes. I’ve been here for two years and have so much left to explore – it never gets boring.

I had a great time when I visited the Christmas markets in Gloucester. There were so many exciting stands and it was a really fun opportunity to explore with friends.

I also enjoy going on walks through Hartpury village, it’s really relaxing and the views are stunning.

I would say my favourite thing to do is go to Gloucester Quays. It has a shopping centre that’s full of famous brands such as Calvin Klein, Jack Wills, The North Face etc. It also has amazing places to eat including Nando’s, Pizza Express and Wagamama’s, and well-known pubs such as Wetherspoons.

The great thing about the Quays is that you never run out of things to do. There is so much to see and do. Over the Christmas holidays, they put up an ice ring so that can go skating with your friends.

Whatever you fancy doing, is most likely possible to go in Gloucester. It is such a nice day out.

Gloucester city centre is great for a day trip and you can find plenty of cosy places to stop for lunch.

Make sure to go down to the Docks by Gloucester Quays and have a walk around. The area is especially beautiful during the evenings when they light it up and some of the boats have hung up fairy lights on their decks.

If you have more time to explore, take a walk along the River Severn.

My favourite places to visit are Gloucester Quays, the Cotswolds, Cheltenham, and the Forest of Dean. Gloucester Quays have lots of great events, including the Tall Ships and Christmas markets (complete with an ice rink!), selling food, drink and handcrafted goods.

While there is plenty to see and do locally, I really enjoy spending time on campus by the lake.

You’ve heard about Gloucester Quays, but did you know there’s a Ninja Warrior in Gloucester? It’s just 20-minutes from campus and so much fun, if you’re up for the challenge.

Cheltenham town is close too. You can get a bus or drive if you bring your car. It has high street and boutique shopping, wine bars at Montpellier, restaurants, bars and entertainment at the Brewery Quarter, plus big beautiful parks – Pittville Park and the boating lake is a must-visit in the summer.
