James' Hartpury Experience
"When I first started my course, everyone interested in completing a work placement with the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust (GWT) was asked to attend a recruitment day, produce a written application and attend an interview. I was lucky enough to secure one of the four placements available and got to support the reserve manager for one day a week over two years. My typical day involved meeting the manager at his workshop on the edge of the River Wye – a truly stunning location! I supported him in a range of practical management tasks relating to the 25 nature reserves he manages across the Forest of Dean, but also with surveying and monitoring and volunteer and community engagement. I went on to secure paid work with the GWT over the summer, carrying out habitat surveys, which provided me with more valuable experience and I’ve now got a job as a warden with the National Trust in Sherborne."
