Kerry is in charge of running our yard of in-patient horses whilst they are here with us at the Therapy Centre and overseeing their treatment. She's responsible for managing our student volunteers which can include delivering educational yard practical's and ensures the horses get the right amount and type of exercise according to their treatment and individual rehabilitation programmes. She has also worked with the Canadian para dressage team at the Olympics – an opportunity that was given to me through Hartpury.
Kerry's Hartpury Experience
"I knew from a young age that I wanted to work with horses, but I wasn’t sure what route I wanted to take. Hartpury University could offer me so many experiences and opportunities in the equine industry, which would help me decide the best direction to take my career in. I completed a National Award and National Certificate before moving on to a Foundation Degree in Equine Performance.
Working as a student warden and a barn mentor during both my first and second years at Hartpury University is something I’ll never forget. I met a lot more people and experienced new things. Working on the three major events held at Hartpury was also a highlight. Working alongside international riders, coaches and judges with industry professionals is a massive bonus when it comes to progressing your career."
Developing Industry Connections
"I think the most important thing about my degree was it allowed me to realise my strengths and weaknesses and learn how I could build on them both to become better at what I do. Not only that, but the vast amount of extra-curricular work-related experiences that were available through the university gave me skills that I use every day and that I’ll continue to use throughout my career. The practical element of my degree was what made me choose it - the hands-on experience in the yard and the opportunities for work experience.
Having owned my own horse from a young age, I always knew that I wanted to work in the equine industry and my experiences at Hartpury University were ultimately what got me into the role that I’m in now. They gave me the chance to put what I’d learned into practice, giving me the perfect set of skills to work in this industry.
My advice is to take every opportunity available to you at Hartpury University. There are so many different things you can do and experience here and all of them will help you to succeed once you graduate and move into the world of work."
