What I do for work experience
As well as working as a barn mentor and in the Equine Therapy Centre at Hartpury, I have been lucky enough to get the opportunity to work on Great Britain Olympic dressage rider Carl Hester’s yard while studying for my degree. And it’s all thanks to the contacts that Hartpury has!
My highlights from working in the industry
From day one, I was made to feel most welcome from Carl and the rest of Team Hester. They’re all truly lovely people and take such great care of these special horses. The team have allowed me to achieve things I could only have dreamt of and there are too many highlights to mention! However, hacking out on Nip Tuck with Alan Davies and Valegro really stands out in my mind!
How Hartpury University has helped to open doors for me
Utilising the fantastic networking opportunities that Hartpury has to offer has been invaluable for me. A special thanks must go to Fizz Marshall, manager at Hartpury’s own Equine Therapy Centre. Fizz has been extremely supportive of me over my time here at Hartpury and, without her help, I would never have been given such a fantastic opportunity! The Therapy Centre has not only boosted my equine therapy and rehabilitation knowledge, but opened my eyes to successful yard management and the importance of implementing ground schooling techniques into a horse’s regime to improve ridden work.
Why I chose Hartpury University
Ever since I discovered Hartpury at a Further Education fair back home in the Isle of Man, it became my number one choice in pursuing my degree in Equestrian Sports Science. Originating from such a small Island, it was important for me to move to the ‘mainland’ to achieve my dreams of successfully working within the equine industry; I feel that Hartpury has been instrumental in me doing so.
What makes Hartpury Equine special?
Hartpury Equine’s fantastic facilities really stand out for me. Having my own horse here on livery has allowed me to take advantage of everything Hartpury has to offer and the regular shows have allowed me to compete, despite not having my own transport. This has improved our partnership no end. The knowledgeable team of equine staff and lecturers are extremely supportive and provide excellent opportunities to get involved in a variety of activities on both an educational and recreational basis.
My hopes for the future
I would be happy if I could become even half the rider Carl is! Schooling and producing correct and happy dressage horses is my main passion, so I hope to achieve a successful career in doing this. However, like thousands of other budding dressage enthusiasts, working for Carl Hester on a full-time basis would be a dream come true. Carl and the rest of the team’s horsemanship, talent and success is, in my eyes, the pinnacle of dressage!
Top tips for future students
Get involved! Hartpury has a lot to offer any student, as long as they take advantage of the opportunities provided. Personally, volunteering at the Equine Therapy Centre has really helped me to come out of my shell and meet happy, helpful and like-minded people – so give it a go!
