What I do on my work placement
I work as the Performance Analyst for Gloucester Rugby’s Academy squad on a three-year full-time internship while studying for my degree at Hartpury University. I work in a team of three. We film the training sessions for the players and coaches to review, plus we live code all the games. Everything that happens in a game will have a clip, so we can focus in on line-outs and scrums for examples and break the game down for the coaches to review after the match. Everything each player does is also clipped individually. I focus on the contact area and judge what each player is doing – good and bad – and report that back on a Monday morning for us all to go over together. We use this analysis to review and preview every game.
I love my course at Hartpury and the work I’m doing at Gloucester and it has confirmed to me that I definitely want to work as a Performance Analyst when I graduate. I did some work back home with the Ospreys and the Welsh Rugby Union, which definitely helped me get the job at Gloucester, along with the fact that at Hartpury I live next door to their training ground. It certainly helps me to balance working with my studies! Three years working with a top Premiership Rugby club should definitely make me more employable and it’s great that as part of my job I see all the talented Hartpury players coming through too!
