Welcome video

Your Head of Department and Programme Manager explain more about your first week and life on your course. Your video will be available later in the summer, ahead of enrolment.

Kit and equipment

  • As you will spending a lot of time outdoors observing and measuring biodiversity/habitats etc you will need to ensure that you have suitable clothing for ALL types of weather. As a guide you should aim for the following (items in bold are highly recommended):
  • Sturdy footwear including waterproof walking boots with ankle support. Wellington boots are useful for very wet/boggy conditions.
  • Waterproof and breathable coat/jacket with hood (ensure the waterproofing is at least 10,000mm e.g. Suitable for moderate and periodical heavy rain). It should say information in the garment label.
  • Waterproof trousers – very useful as a wind block. Relatively inexpensive pair will be suitable e.g. packable ones that can be stored in a rucksack.
  • Rucksack with waterproof cover may be useful, or some way of keeping your notebook etc dry in the field e.g. sealable bag inside.
  • Outdoor trousers and other clothing layers, e.g. long sleeved shirt (avoids biting insects, protects from sun). Specific outdoor clothes tend to more comfortable to move in that say jeans, and also hard-wearing e.gt. rip stop fabric or reinforced areas.
  • Warm layers – fleece or zip up jacket. Anything that can be layered and removed easily as the UK weather is changeable and having zip up layers allows them to be removed easily and quickly.
  • Depending on how you feel the cold you may want to get some thin thermal layers.
  • Hat/gloves for particularly cold days.
  • Sunblock factor 30 and above.
  • Sunhat for warmer weather.
  • Insect repellent
  • For the Knepp field trip: sleeping bag and roll mat

With any of these items you can always get them during the course of your degree, but essentials are walking boots and a waterproof coat and some clothing that you are happy to wear outdoors and you will be comfortable walking in and bending down etc.

You will be undertaking some plant and invertebrate identification, and a x10 hand lens would be useful for this, having your own hand lens will be a good future investment if you intend to work in professions where you are IDing small species or structures, for example ecology consultancy roles, or reserve management, anywhere where you are required to undertake surveys. For an example of a x10 magnification hand lens from NHBS the Triplet x10, 21mm diameter is a good option: https://www.nhbs.com/singlet-loupe-10-x-21mm-hand-lens

Although the University has some binoculars, you may wish to have your own pair. For bird watching magnifications of 8 X 42 or 10 X 42 are best.

Recommended books

There are NO essential texts for this programme, the below are some suggestions on the types of texts that may be useful for you, though we do have some copies in our library and kit.

Good for general survey methods to support study design;

•    Sutherland, W.J. ed., 2006. Ecological census techniques: a handbook. Cambridge university press. (We have a couple of copies in the library

We have ID guides at the University, but a copy of one flower key and one grass key may be beneficial, though it may be worth waiting until you have tried different guides so that you know which type works best for you, as they are all a little different.

  • Francis Rose and Clare O'Reilly (2006). The Wild Flower Key (Revised Edition) - How to identify wild plants, trees and shrubs in Britain and Ireland. Warne; Rev Ed edition.
Marjorie Blamey, Richard Fitter, Alastair Fitter (2013). The Wild Flowers of Britain and Ireland 2nd Edition. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC.
Edward Hubbard (1992). Grasses: A Guide to Their Structure, Identification, Uses and Distribution. (Penguin Press Science).
Dominic Price (2017). A Field Guide to Grasses, Sedges and Rushes. The Species Recovery Trust.
    Non-essential, but good for reference:
Academic Research, Writing and Referencing. Harlow, UK: Longman. Deane, M. (Current Edition)
Doing Postgraduate Research. London, UK: Sage. Potter, S. ed. (Current Edition)

Pre-Arrival Preparation
To support your transition into postgraduate study, we encourage you to revisit the following key areas from your prior learning. Refreshing these foundations will help you engage more confidently with both the academic and practical components of the course:

  • Health screening and lifestyle guidelines – including pre‑exercise screening, contraindications to exercise, and key principles of health promotion and behaviour change.
  • Anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics – with particular emphasis on major body systems, tissue function, and how movement mechanics influence performance and injury risk.
  • Principles of exercise programming and assessment – review exercise prescription, progression, and methods of fitness and performance assessment across a range of populations and settings.
  • Research methods and academic skills – including data analysis, interpretation of research literature, academic writing conventions, and accurate use of Harvard referencing

For those who are keen to prepare in advance for the modules, early familiarisation with the areas below will support your learning and success in both the Clinical Examination and Assessment for Sports Therapists and Developing the Evidence‑Informed Practitioner modules:

  • Musculoskeletal anatomy, including bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons
  • Common musculoskeletal injuries, with attention to mechanisms of injury, symptoms, and typical healing processes
  • Immediate injury management – observing assessment and decision‑making in televised sports, life support guidelines.
