This foundation year pathway provides an alternative route into degree-level study. It’s ideal for those who need to gain subject-specific knowledge and skills in order to progress onto the full BA qualification.
The modules on this course have been informed by industry, which means you’ll develop the business skills and experience that employers are looking for. Alongside sports-related topics, you’ll study the core principles and practice of business, including finance, marketing, leadership and strategic management.
The use and importance of social media, sponsorship, brand development and project management are among some of the specialist areas you’ll cover. Your assessments will focus on your practical experience, to ensure you graduate ready to hit the ground running. You could find yourself running a graduate assessment centre on campus or pitching a new business idea in the style of Dragons’ Den.
As you progress, you can tailor your studies to suit the career path you want to take. Whether event management, entrepreneurship or business development, there is a path to suit everyone. During your second year, you’ll be able to gain real-world experience working in an area of industry that interests you. You can use this to gain professional skills and experience to set you apart from other graduates.
Our excellent industry links will lead to regular trips to strengthen your learning and understanding of the behind-the-scenes workings of major businesses. We’ll also pay for you to complete an Institute of Leadership and Management qualification, widely recognised by employers across the world.
A work placement in your second year, alongside the opportunity to undertake a sandwich year in industry, will prepare you for graduate employment. We have great partnerships with local and national sports clubs and businesses including links with Gloucester Rugby, our own Hartpury RFC rugby team, Tour of Britain and Cheltenham Racecourse. You could also experience studying in the world’s most lucrative sports industry, the USA, as part of a new study abroad option.

Learning and assessment
This programme comprises of different modules, which focus on specific subjects. The modular structure of the programme gives you flexibility and choice and you can attend introductory sessions for optional modules before having to finally decide which ones you wish to study. You will be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams and coursework. Many of the modules will be marked based on a mixture of assessment types, whilst others will be based solely on one type of assessment.
Graduates will have the option to move into a variety of careers, either within the sporting industry or as part of the wider business industry. Career options include sports agency, marketing in business, business development, as well as sports management and administration roles.
