BSc (Hons) Equine Performance and Rehabilitation

Develop your skillset and knowledge in equine performance analysis and rehabilitation.  Learn in our specialist labs. Gain experience in our commercial Equine Therapy Centre and undertake a supported work placement in industry as part of your degree.

You’ll develop the ability to apply scientific principles to training practices, analyse performance and understand management and rehabilitation of the equine athlete.   You’ll be introduced to key industry professionals, utilise the latest performance analysis equipment and gain knowledge of the latest scientific approaches in order to promote equine performance.

Equine Anatomy, Veterinary Science and Nutrition are also integral subjects, as you learn about the biological systems of the horse, how they interact, and how they combine to underpin performance and success.  You’ll also develop your understanding of the fast-changing equine sector through modules dedicated to the equine industry as well as the management of equestrian facilities.

In your second and final years, you’ll delve deeper into the fascinating principles that underpin cross-discipline training approaches.  You’ll have opportunities to support the rehabilitation of horses in our commercial equine therapy centre, experiencing first-hand the latest scientific approaches to equine training and rehabilitation post injury.  Equally, experiencing first-hand from industry professionals, the latest scientific approaches to equine training to further enhance performance and competitive longevity. You'll also have the opportunity to go off-site to experience various training and rehabilitation centres across the country.

You’ll apply theory to practice, with the opportunity for ‘live’ projects, work placement and field trips. You’ll hear from industry professionals within lectures to prepare you for future employment and provide valuable networking opportunities.

In your final year, you’ll examine performance and rehabilitation in more detail, you’ll enhance your understanding of the impact of injury and disease on both short and long-term performance.  You’ll explore veterinary and industry approaches to managing injury and disease to promote a successful return to competition.

You’ll also get the chance to explore contemporary industry and business management concepts, to understand governance and decision making in the equine sector whilst developing your professional skillset throughout the duration of the programme in order to positively communicate and influence others to promote and enhance research informed practice.

Industry opportunities

A work placement in your second year and an optional sandwich year between years two and three on this degree means you can gain valuable experience in industry, either in the UK or internationally. Students have recently undertaken work placements at our Equine Therapy Centre, as well as at rehabilitation facilities that specialise in the retraining of racehorses, veterinary care centres and re-homing centres including the Blue Cross.

This programme comprises of different modules, which focus on specific subjects. The modular structure of the programme gives you flexibility and choice. To develop your degree programme, you can attend introductory sessions for optional modules before having to finally decide which ones you wish to study.

Learning and assessment

You will be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams and coursework. Many of the modules will be marked based on a mixture of assessment types, whilst others will be based solely on one type of assessment.

Graduate destinations

As an equine graduate you may go on to work as an equine scientist, manager or rehabilitation centre manager. You could also work in racecourses, event management, teaching or biomechanics. Recent graduate destinations have included:

  • Rehabilitation and re-training on competition and racing yards
  • Equine therapy centre management
  • Postgraduate study – MSc Equine Science, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc in Animal Manipulation (McTimoney)

Entry Requirements

GCSE | A minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded) or equivalent, to include English Language and Mathematics.

A Level | Typical offer is BBC equivalent. This must include a minimum of two A Levels including one in a Biological Science and excludes General Studies.

Vocational award | Typical offer is a MMM in an Extended Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject.
