You'll make the most of our professional sports campus as you learn in our new human performance and biomechanics laboratories. You'll understand the science behind the mechanics of movement, sports psychology, health and exercise. You'll then apply your theoretical knowledge by working to improve athletes' physical and psychological qualities. As you progress, you'll tailor your studies to suit your career goals, getting hands-on with both elite and recreational athletes and specialist equipment on campus.
During your time with us you’ll learn from lecturers who are also industry professionals, whether that’s in biomechanics, physiology, psychology, or performance analysis. You could also have the chance to work alongside one of our competing sports teams or elite-level athletes on campus.
Your first year will give you theoretical understanding of a range of subjects. You’ll examine and understand the science behind the fascinating areas of the mechanics of movement, sports psychology, exercise physiology. As you progress through the course you’ll be able to tailor your studies towards what you want to do when you graduate.
From your second year you’ll take a more hands-on approach, focusing on industry techniques to get you ready for employment. You’ll make the most of our professional-style sports campus, learning in our new human performance and biomechanics laboratories as part of our new Sports Academy developments. You’ll get hands-on with sports people and specialist equipment, bringing together everything you’ve learnt to make a real difference to the sportspeople you’re working with.
You’ll have lots of opportunities to gain industry experience outside of your studies, for example, helping tackle obesity as part of the Hartlinx project or support young athletes in local schools. These experiences and opportunities will aid your understanding of essential areas of sport and exercise sciences. As a graduate you could expect to gain employment in professional or amateur sport, the NHS, or in private healthcare, as a performance analyst, exercise physiologist, or biomechanist. You'll be encouraged to complete various qualifications to better understand human growth, exercise, performance and nutrition. You could also volunteer with our sports teams and elite and recreational athletes through our on-site Sports Academy.

Want to use science to promote change in the health, exercise and performance industry.
This programme comprises of different modules, which focus on specific subjects. The modular structure of the programme gives you flexibility and choice and you can attend introductory sessions for optional modules before having to finally decide which ones you wish to study.
Learning and assessment
You will be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams and coursework. Many of the modules will be marked based on a mixture of assessment types, whilst others will be based solely on one type of assessment.
Sport, health and exercise science is an exciting and expanding industry with a wealth of opportunities. A Sport and Exercise Science graduate could expect to gain employment within professional or amateur sport, as well as with the NHS or in private healthcare, as an:
- Exercise physiologist
- Health and lifestyle adviser
Sport and Exercise Science graduates are also able to progress onto postgraduate study.
