Top up your existing qualifications to a full BSc degree in one year. Focus on the topics that interest you most and tailor your study towards your career goals. Gain the experience and skills to progress into a range of career options including sport performance, sports science, health, education, coaching or business.

This degree is an ideal option for international applicants. It could reduce the time it takes to obtain a full Honours degree, compared to your home-based programme options.

You’ll benefit from learning in a modern sports campus, working with athletes from our Sports Academy programmes. Work-related application is central to the programme and you’ll learn from lecturers with extensive industry experience. You’ll also benefit from our strong industry partnerships within the sporting industry and will be encouraged to explore and think critically about current practices and future developments.

You’ll gain hands-on experience, working as part of our industry-standard facilities. This includes our human performance and biomechanics labs, power and cardio gyms, as well as all-weather and grass pitches as part of our new sports academy complex. You’ll conduct your own research project in an area of interest, as well as being assigned a personal tutor and supervisor to support your progress.

What you'll study

This course is completed over one year and contains compulsory modules covering research and professional development, as well as a series of optional modules.

Optional modules change each year in line with student, industry and research demands - you'll find recent topics studied below. You can attend introductory sessions for optional modules before deciding which ones to study.

Level six (year one)

You’ll improve your research and personal development skills through two compulsory modules. One requires you to undertake a research project of your choice, with the other focusing on improving your employability skills, ready for the sports industry.

A wide range of optional modules give you the chance to really focus on the areas that interest you most, and to best suit your career goals.

This module focuses on improving performance through collecting and analysing data, using specialist technology and software.

Develop your practical skills within performance analysis and evaluation.

Understand how sport psychology is applied in practice. Focus on the building, monitoring and evaluating of applied interventions.

Evaluate the leadership and management of sport science support within the performance environment.

This module covers physical screening protocols and injury-prevention methods.

Understand the return-to-play considerations through studying the relationships between doctors, sports therapists, and strength and conditioning coaches.

Study current statutory frameworks and theory-based recommendations to inform best-practice applications within a range of sports education environments.

Understand and identify the exercise needs of special populations, designing and evaluating exercise programmes that are appropriate to their needs.

Study the impact of social media in relation to fan-generated content, as a complex communication tool for sports organisations.

Create a new sponsorship relationship that achieves brand-awareness or brand exposure for a business of your choice.

Develop an awareness of project management concepts and applications in readiness for one of many graduate roles in project management.

You’ll have your own personal tutor while you’re here who will support you to succeed in your studies. You’ll also have access to our academic and wellbeing support teams who run regular workshops and one-to-one sessions on campus and online.

Typically, you’ll receive around 12 hours of scheduled contact time per week depending on the modules you select.

You’ll be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams, written assignments and presentations. Many of the modules will be marked based on a mixture of assessment types, whilst others will be based solely on one type of assessment. Feedback will be given using a mixture of verbal and written comments; these will be offered to help you achieve your goals as a student on this programme.  In support of this, your personal tutor will be available to help you build upon feedback and develop skills that are necessary for a sports graduate.

This programme is taught over two semesters, normally consisting of 12 weeks of scheduled teaching and then assessment weeks, with an overview below:

  • Scheduled teaching takes place between 8:30 to 20:30 Monday to Friday
  • Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities
  • Work placements may entail different days and hours
  • Part-time students may need to attend learning activities five days each week, depending on modules selected
  • Timetables are available during enrolment week

We also have strong industry partnerships in Gloucestershire, across the UK, and internationally including with Premiership side, Gloucester Rugby, and Cheltenham Town Football Club.

Many of our students retain their existing part-time work or sporting commitments, where practical to do so. This provides them with a vital link between their module content and its application in practice.

As a Sport Performance graduate, you could go on to work in various roles within the sports industry, including performance analysis, as well as facility and project management. Sports facilities

Our new £8.8million sports facilities includes fully equipped Human Performance and Biomechanics Laboratories, as well as an altitude chamber. Our new sports hall and 3G football pitch are equipped with state-of-the-art video analysis cameras for live capture of coaching sessions and gameplay. You’ll also have access to grass pitches, and a golf driving range. We also have indoor and outdoor equine arenas, and a cross country track on campus.

Sports therapy and rehabilitation suites

Our new suites include world-leading equipment for specialist and sports therapy activities. Technologies include an anti-gravity treadmill utilised for performance sport training and research, as well as a pitch-side first aid centre, located next to our professional sports pitches.

Laboratories

Our laboratories are modern and well-equipped, providing the ideal spaces for scientific activities and research. Some are used for specialist microbiological culturing and analysis, others for biochemistry and physiology.

Study spaces

Our University Learning Centre has books, journals, ebooks, computers and breakout study spaces. In addition, we have a Study Lounge – an informal space with sports equipment, study booths and chill-out spaces to support both studying and relaxation.
