Eliza shares her top tips for international students coming to Hartpury.

Skaiste loves how supportive and friendly the staff are. She loves being able to walk Ralph, her campus dog, in between lectures, and seeing Hartpury’s diverse collection of over 70 animal species. She chose Hartpury for its large rural campus; which makes it perfect for beautiful country walks.

Ana Domecq San Gil, an international student from Spain is a showjumper and currently has her horse at Hartpury University. She regularly competes alongside her course, which is one of the things she loves about Hartpury – as well as getting to know people from all around the world. While all of the students are from different backgrounds and cultures, they have one big common interest; horses!

Hannah Knaggs is an international graduate from Texas USA. After five years at Hartpury – during which time she studied Access to HE and MSci Equine Science, and helped shape the student experience as Students’ Union President – she’s here to share her tips and insights.

The accommodation, lecture halls and facilities are surrounded by a collection of hacking trails and public footpaths. This is what drew Lucy to Hartpury as she has always dreamed of living in the countryside. She often walks around campus before and after lectures to relax.

Emily was local to the area, so had been coming to Hartpury to use the equine facilities for years, which are obviously very impressive. She has always loved the culture of the place, and because it’s not in a city centre, it’s so nice and peaceful.

Studying Canine Training and Performance means a lot to Ellie as she has three dogs that she absolutely adores, with a particular interest in assistance and guide dogs. She gained an interest in human-animal interaction with her canine companions, that has been sparked by her degree.

Alanna is a second-year Equine Business Management student. She originally comes from County Durham, located roughly 240 miles north of Hartpury. In her first year, I stayed in Limbury on site and met some amazing people who she now house-shares with in Gloucester. She has her own horse who takes up a lot of her time, but she enjoys watching sport at Hartpury when she gets some time to socialise socialise with her friends.

Joe became the Student's Union President, representing Hartpury Student's at NUS conferences and workshops by addressing student issues and creating new policies.

Going to university is as much about having amazing experiences, as it is about gaining your degree. When you’re after a fun day out with friends, there’s plenty to see and do in the local area.

When you imagine your life at Hartpury, you might be thinking about expanding your knowledge in thought-provoking lectures and developing industry skills using our world-class facilities. But when it comes to your first week – known as your Freshers’ Week – you might not be so sure. Students go on tours, days out and do a variety of different activities. 

Alanna has two jobs that she works alongside studying her degree and having her own pony in the on-site livery – so her time management and budgeting need to be right! There are plenty of opportunities on campus such as working as a student ambassador, student representative and in sports coaching.

Sophie joined Hartpury college and decided to stay for university as it’s a really lovely place to be, with great people and an extraordinary campus. She loves the size of Hartpury university, as it gives her a family environment feel and she can easily get to know more people.

Hannah loves the combination of practical sessions and lectures as they help her to understand and apply what she's learning. She's gained real hands-on experience through work experience and has been carrying out pitch-side first-aid to develop her practical skills. Through participating in second and third year clinics, she has also gained an insight into what she'll be doing in her next two years.
