It was fantastic being able to tailor my degree by choosing which modules suited my interests and ambitions and my tutors not only kindled my interest in conservation, but pushed me to aim high and achieve - both in my degree and with life goals.

While I was putting together my dissertation project, I had to spend a lot of time at the Hartpury dairy unit swabbing the cows and the team on the unit were massively helpful with my research. They even asked me to work part-time at the dairy and I absolutely loved it.

Hartpury has opened new doors and enabled me to share my passion with like-minded and interesting people, from lecturers who have supported and encouraged me, to professionals who have inspired me.

Hartpury has everything you need on site – I loved the practical sessions with the different animals and volunteering with lambing at the farm.

The fact that Hartpury offered the specific course I wanted, coupled with the ease of travelling in once a week for my academic sessions, made it the best choice.

The ability to access a foundation course for Bioveterinary science was a huge contributor. Coming from a non-academic background, I was unsure how I would adjust to university and the foundation year seemed like the perfect opportunity to introduce myself into studying.

Vanessa’s practical involvement in, and love for farming and companion animals inspired her to obtain a postgraduate qualification in Animal Welfare, Policy and Legislation from Hartpury University. Her studies have enabled her to embark upon a new career as a legal advisor for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Animal Welfare (APGAW).

The best thing about Hartpury is that if you have specific interests, you can talk to your lecturers as they’re so well-versed. They have a wide range of knowledge, and even if they don't think they can support you fully, they'll get you in touch with other people who can.

I felt a completely different connection when visiting Hartpury compared to other universities, as a specialised university, you’re more than just a number.

Moving to a new country was daunting, but the support from the international team was exceptional. They were always available, incredibly informative, and quick to find answers when I had questions — even helping me explain key details to my parents.

From the moment I visited Hartpury, it stood out. The facilities were incredible, and what really made the difference was the support on offer.

I chose the zoo because the nature of the work was where my heart lies. It was 100% the best thing I’ve ever done and is helping me apply all of the practical knowledge I gained during my final year at Hartpury University.

I always wanted to be a vet but I wasn’t aware of the alternative career paths. I was offered a session in canine hydrotherapy as part of a study week in my first year and volunteered at the Cotswold Dog Spa while studying for my degree. I secured a job there after graduation.

It's amazing that Hartpury offers the opportunity to work with different species as part of the degree. As part of the course, I did a 40-hour internship in the Animal Collection. I’ve been getting hands on with exotic animals – meerkats, skunks and prairie dogs.
