Learn to develop athletic performance in our £8.8million Sport Academy 2, purposely built in 2019. You'll have opportunities for placements and work experience through our links with professional sports teams such as Gloucester Rugby, Cheltenham Town FC, Hartpury Sport Academy, West Bromwich Albion FC and local schools.

This programme follows the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) quality standards. You'll develop essential strength and conditioning knowledge and skills and learn about the other fundamental sports science disciplines including physiology, anatomy, sport psychology and biomechanics.

This facilitates an understanding into the roles of other sports science support including technical coaches, sports therapists and sports scientists; to develop the skills required to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

You'll learn from lecturers with professional experience and are able to provide applied examples to explain underpinning theoretical knowledge. Finally, there are opportunities to achieve professional qualifications during the programme to ensure you have professional awards alongside your degree.

Complementary to your education, industry placements opportunities will help cultivate your own coaching style. You'll be able to develop and practise your skills in our professional coaching environment, making the most of industry-standard facilities and working alongside elite athletes on campus and through our industry partnerships.

As you progress through the programme, the combination of learning, work placements and opportunity for professional qualifications will help ensure you are industry-ready to prepare you to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team upon graduation.

Industry opportunities

You’ll benefit from our strong links with professional sports teams, industry governing bodies and our own Sports Academy that gives students the opportunity to work with elite athletes on campus. If you choose to undertake a sandwich year in industry, you’ll gain great experience ready for your professional career upon graduation. In the past students have completed placements with Southampton FC, Derbyshire CCC, Bristol City FC, Essex CCC, Gloucester Rugby, English Institute of Sport and Hartpury Sport Academy.

Are interested in understanding and creating training methods to develop athletic capabilities, injury prevention, thus enhancing sporting performance.


This programme comprises of different modules, which focus on strength and conditioning specific modules and options from the key sport science disciplines. The modular structure of the programme gives you flexibility and choice in years 2 and 3  to tailor your degree to your own interests.

Learning and assessment

You will be assessed through a mixture of written exams, practical exams and coursework. Many of the modules will be marked based on a mixture of assessment types, whilst others will be based solely on one type of assessment.

Entry Requirements

A typical offer for this course is:

UCAS tariff points | 112 UCAS tariff points or equivalent.

GCSE | A minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded) or equivalent, to include English Language, Mathematics and a Science.

A Level |Typical offer is BBC-ABB or equivalent. This must include a minimum of two A Levels including one in a Biological Science, Sports Studies or PE subject.

Vocational award | Typical offer is a DMM-DDM in an Extended Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject.

We welcome students with equivalent qualifications, including Access and the International Baccalaureate. Contact the admissions team to discuss.

We may interview mature applicants and those with non-traditional qualifications to ensure this is the right course for you.

The minimum offer for this course is:

UCAS tariff points | 80 UCAS tariff points or equivalent, providing this is combined with relevant experience.

Previous learning towards a university-level qualification or relevant work experience may count as credit for this course. Please contact our admissions team for further information.
